Red deer

The red deer is Europe's largest deer and can weigh up to 250 kg. Males bear large, heavily branched antlers that become increasingly impressive with age. The animal lives in a variety of environments from forests to open plains and is particularly active during the fall rut when bulls fight for territory. Roaring and cutting calls fill the forest, creating a dramatic and intense hunting environment. The hunt requires both good knowledge of the terrain and skillful shooting, as the animal can move quickly in varied terrain.

  • Type of hunting: Drive hunting, pass hunting and stealth hunting during the rut.
  • Geographical distribution: All of Europe, especially Scandinavia and Central Europe.
  • Tip: Use binoculars to assess territory, plan your shot carefully and keep noise levels low.
