Gems are a vigilant and agile upland game animal that lives in the mountains of Europe. It moves unhindered in steep and rocky terrain and is known for its speed and sharpness.

Gems

Gems (Rupicapra rupicapra), or alpine goat, are small but powerful mountain goats that live in high alpine environments above the tree line. It is extremely mobile and confident in steep terrain, making the hunt both technically and physically demanding. Gems are vigilant, have good eyesight and react quickly to danger - making every approach an ordeal. The trophy is the characteristically backward curved horns, and the body weight is between 20-30 kg depending on sex and habitat.

  • Type of hunt: Stealth and wake hunting in high alpine terrain.
  • Geographical distribution: Alps, Carpathians, Pyrenees and Balkan Mountains.
  • Tip: Good fitness and the right equipment are essential. Early mornings often yield the best results. Use binoculars diligently and plan every move carefully.
